Shingle Roofing

When it comes to residential roofing, there is no material more popular than asphalt shingles. They have become the top choice amongst homeowners primarily because they offer an effective balance of 2 things: cost and durability.

Two kinds of asphalt shingles are applied today, organic and glass fiber. Shingles are gauged by warranty and ASTM test standards. Organic shingles are comprised of approximately 40% or higher asphalt content per square (100 sq. ft.) than fiberglass shingles. Shingle durability is ranked by warranted life, ranging from twenty years to fifty years. In many instances lifetime warranties are available.

Asphalt shingles typically endure longer in colder climates than warmer ones and thermal shock can damage shingles when the temperature abruptly changes. Proper roof can extend the service life of a roof. Shingles should not be applied when temperatures are less than fifty-one degrees Fahrenheit, as each shingle must seal to the layer below it to form a single cohesive structure. The underlying exposed asphalt should be softened by sunlight and heat. A few shingle types utilize release tape that must be removed just before installation.

Fiberglass shingles have a base layer of glass fiber reinforcing mat. Fiberglass shingles typically obtain a class "A" fire rating. A newer design of fiberglass asphalt shingle, called laminated or architectural, uses two distinct layers that are bonded together with asphalt sealant. Laminated shingles are heavier, more expensive, and more durable than traditional 3-tab shingle designs. Laminated shingles also give a more varied, contoured visual effect to a roof surface.
